What our fund does...
The Fund was set up in 1934 in memory of Sydney George Edridge OBE, the founder and first General Secretary of Napo, and is now an independent registered charity.
Eligibility to benefit from the Edridge Fund extends to anyone in the Probation Service or Cafcass who is eligible to be a member of Napo, and their dependents.
This includes retired staff.
The Edridge Fund supports Probation and Cafcass staff
at times of stress and
financial crisis.

NEWS JANUARY 2012
Edridge reports on new ways of giving easily, and reports the record level of applications for help, as well as a record figure paid out in 2011. We also feature the efforts colleagues have made to raise money for the cause, and tell readers about marvellous efforts to come this year. Your Edridge needs you !
New Ways of Giving
Text Giving will be coming to Edridge shortly! Yes – we really have joined the 21st Century, and details of how to do this will be on the website shortly. We have also improved our links for donations on the website, but in case that is a bit fiddly on your smartphone, then the really smart way these days is to text your donation. It costs us nothing in administration, and is simply added to your phone bill, or gets taken off your prepaid allowance. Just the price of a coffee will do nicely – so long as enough people do it often enough. Every little helps, and we need it.
Record Level of Grants in 2011
Just to put readers in the picture, we withdrew £10,000 from our investment portfolio in November, and that was only just enough to take us through to year end. It's obvious really – if we carry on at this rate we are going to run out of cash. Remember, you might just be one of the people needing help some time. During the year we received 194 applications for assistance, which is 42 % up on the level for 2010.
Nearly forgot – we paid out £53,090 in grants during 2011, which is £10,000 more than our most recent high in 2008. Get the picture?
Recent Fund Raising Efforts
All thanks to NAPSAC, who have raised over £1,500 for Edridge. In case you don't know this is a group of Probation staff who enjoy proper walks in the countryside and raise money for Edridge at the same time. In October last year they ran a special sponsored walk, which is how we got a healthy boost to our finances, just when we needed it. You can read further about this on our website – just click on the link on the front page of our website.
There have been many other local fund raising efforts by branches and of course we cannot miss out the 10k run by Napo Officers and staff from Chivalry Road. Despite the strenuous efforts of our colleagues, the pattern of getting low levels of sponsored donations perhaps reflects the difficult times we are all facing. That does not stop us being very grateful for all we receive.
If you are a reader of Napo News you will have received an appeal for funds as an insert, with a Standing Order form. In case you lost it, and want to donate, you can download the form using the link on any of our web pages.
New Fund Raising in 2012
Fred Pickstone, former Napo Chair, is celebrating his 70th birthday, and also the Napo Centenary, with a sponsored cycle ride from John O’Groats to Landsend during May, and he is looking for sponsorship to raise funds for Edridge. There is already a link on our welcome page to sponsor Fred via Just Giving, but you can also donate by text. Just text “SFXP47 and £?? “(the amount of donation in pounds only) to 70070 (leaving out the quotation marks. You can also e mail Fred at afredp@gmail.com, and you can also follow him on Twitter at the following twitter@afredp
Next month we will bring you further news on Fred, and also more about Karl Hesford in Manchester, who is again doing a sponsored London Marathon for Edridge
