FOREWORD
by Chair of Trustees

Welcome to the guidelines and information for Edridge Representatives. As Trustees, we are very grateful to you for the work you do in assisting applicants, assessing their needs and supporting them during times of trouble. I am sure you are aware that the Edridge Fund is needed now as much as ever.

We are very grateful to Napo for their ongoing financial support. However, we are always in need of additional funds raised from sponsored events, donations in lieu of gifts, or regular donations. Whichever way money is given to Edridge, we would encourage everyone to ensure a Gift Aid form is completed - we can then claim back the tax already paid but this costs the donor nothing extra.

We hope your local Napo branch will have a regular Edridge item on the agenda at all branch meetings. This can be an opportunity to remind people about Edridge - how assistance can be obtained and how they can help the Fund.

On behalf of the Trustees, may I express our thanks to all of you for the valuable work you do for the Fund. We hope you find this booklet of use in carrying out that work.

THE HISTORY OF EDRIDGE

The National Association of Probation Officers was inaugurated in 1912 with its first Chair being Sydney Edridge (Clerk to the Justices at Croydon). Probation Officers received regular salaries for the first time in 1926, though these were very low.

The Edridge Benevolent Trust was set up in 1934 in response to real need, its aim being ‘to alleviate cases of distress amongst serving and retired Officers’. Since its inception, the Trust has been an independent Registered Charity and Napo has been responsible for appointing the Trustees. In 1990, in order to increase the categories of people eligible to benefit, a new trust fund, The Edridge Fund, was set up replacing the old trust fund.

ORGANISATION OF THE FUND
The Trustees

The Trustees are appointed by the National Executive Committee of Napo for a period of five years and are legally responsible to the Charity Commissioners for the administration and use of the Fund. They are responsible to the Service and the applicants for the appropriate making of grants, the support of those in need and the good standing of the Fund. They meet five or six times a year to consider new referrals and review current cases. Every application is dealt with in the strictest confidence. At their meetings, the trustees also receive and report on the Fund’s financial situation.

1.	The Trustees would be unable to fulfil these responsibilities effectively without the Branch Representatives. It is your ability to present an approachable Edridge image and to accept the quite difficult role of being a ‘help’ to colleagues, which will enable the Fund to meet all the needs existing in the Service.

2.	The Trustees have been able to develop a liaison with NPD and CAFCASS, following reorganisation, to ensure management support for the Fund and local representatives. Chief Officers can make a valuable contribution by demonstrating support for the Fund, allowing area communication systems to be used for publicising the Fund.

3.	The work of the Trustees has increased over the years and the management of the Fund has become more complex as the demands made on it have increased. This means that administration costs have risen accordingly and, therefore, any additional fundraising to enable the Charity to help those in need is vitally important and much appreciated by the Trustees.
The Representatives

Each Branch elects its own Edridge Representative. This Representative is usually the first point of contact for anyone wishing to use the Fund.

The Representative is also encouraged to offer personal support should this be welcomed by any applicant. This role is, therefore, of vital importance to the Branch and to the operation of the Fund. The Edridge Representative and Trustees treat every application in the strictest confidence. These are considered at regular meetings throughout the year or, in response to crises, between meetings.

Most referrals for help are channelled through representatives and they are responsible for obtaining details of the applicant’s financial situation and assessing need. Often their role develops into that of a counsellor. Their support enables many serving staff to cope with their problems and free them to offer a better service
to clients and the Courts. Care must be taken not to give advice about issues on which professional advice should be sought.

This caring role is also important when the applicants are retired members of the service or when a serving or retired member of the service dies.

Edridge representatives also have the difficult task of stimulating colleagues’ interest in the Fund. If colleagues do not give adequate financial support, the Fund cannot continue to make grants to those in need. Many representatives appoint deputies to assist them. It is important to gain the support of the branch and the top management. Knowledge of local and national charities can also be helpful. (See Appendix 3 for a selection of Charities)

National representative conferences are usually held bi-annually and the mutual support gained at these meetings is most important. Regional meetings can be organised by the appropriate Trustee should this be felt to be useful.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

1.	All employees of the Service who are eligible to be members of Napo can benefit.

2.	Retired Staff.

3.	Bereaved Partners, Spouses and Dependents of 1 and 2.

Edridge operates only on the basis of demonstrated need. Applications are assessed individually and grants are designed to help towards the applicant’s specific requirements.

TYPES OF GRANT

1. Special Grants

These are the main type of grants made, often at times of financial crisis, to help those who face financial difficulties such as: accident/illness/debt/relationship breakdown.

Normally applicants contact either their local rep or the Edridge office. In each case an application form must be completed and is based on financial need (see application procedure).

Summary

a)	Confidentiality must be ensured

b)	The applicant must demonstrate financial need

c)	Reps suggestions relating to grant level are welcome

d)	It is important to note that Trustees can, in times of emergency, make an immediate grant, often within 24 hours. This is called an ‘emergency special’.

2. Christmas Grants

The Trustees now feel that Christmas grants are perhaps outdated and that, should an applicant need a grant, it should not necessarily be related to Christmas. In the past the Christmas grant has been seen as something of a gift, which, unless there is financial need, should be discouraged. For this reason we have insisted that reps contact each person in their region receiving a Christmas Grant to carry out a personal means test (although not necessarily filling in an application form). We have also been happy to send a Christmas Card from the fund, rather than financial gifts and this has been quite successful.

Summary

a)	Each year we will continue to insist that every person who has been recommended for Christmas grant be contacted and a financial means test be undertaken.

b)	We do not encourage any further applications for Christmas (gift) grants as such.

c)	If reps should wish to send Christmas cards, the fund will be happy to arrange to send these cards without necessarily the thought of a financial gift.

3. Bereavement Grants

Bereavement grants can be made to the dependent of a serving or retired member of the service.

These grants were originally intended for cash at a time when probate had occurred and finances were often frozen. The original grants were intended to defray the cost of a funeral and, at one stage, would have been quite a large part of funeral expenses. Nowadays funerals are usually very expensive and fortunately most people have made provision during their lifetime. Thus the bereavement grant is intended now to provide a small amount of cash in case of immediate need. The question of longer term need can then be assessed by the rep and further grants made if necessary.

Summary

a)	On each occasion, when we are notified of bereavement, we ask the rep to enquire sensitively as to the financial circumstances of the bereaved. It can then be gauged whether a grant is necessary.

b)	Should a grant be necessary, then £100 will normally be sent.

c)	Reps should follow up, at a suitable time after the death, to assess any further need complete an application form, which can be considered by the Trustees in the normal way.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Referrals can be made by the applicant or by a representative/colleague with the applicant’s permission. Some applicants write directly to the Trustees. Ideally, the local representative should deal with all referrals, initially, in order to obtain a full picture of the position and give assistance, if necessary, with completion of the Application Form (Appendix 4).

Applications should then be forwarded to the Secretary of the Edridge Fund:

ASSESSMENT OF NEED

The Trustees are under a legal obligation, under Charity Commission Guidelines, to assess need. This is a very difficult and delicate task but Trustees must have details of the applicant’s income, outgoings, interest from savings and debts so that there can be some consistency and fairness in the distribution of the Fund’s limited resources.

Representatives are encouraged to make a recommendation on the amount of grant.

Occasionally the Trustees are unable to make a grant as sometimes the applicant is not eligible and at others it is felt that there is not sufficient financial need.

As people’s circumstances can change the Trustees request that, if applicants are on a regular/termly grant, an annual review is made (see Types of Grant).

Confidentiality is essential. Applicants often need reassuring that the details of their predicament are forwarded only to the Trustees. Once this is made clear applicants are often able to share their anxieties more readily.

FINANCE

The Edridge Fund receives a regular quarterly donation from Napo. Although this helps the fund considerably, it still only represents a portion of the income required to meet the current level of grants, which increase year by year. Special events are organised locally or nationally for fund raising for Edridge.

In order for the fund to continue giving grants that really help to meet need, it is vital that individual colleagues continue to support it. This can be done in various way including:

1. Gift Aid A good systematic method of support by regular giving either via your County Treasurer or your Bank. By completing a Gift Aid form the donation can be increased by 28p for each £1 given. (See Appendix 6)

2. 50/50 Club A monthly draw for an annual stake (See Appendix 5)

3. Fundraising Supporting special fund raising events organised locally or nationally.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES STATEMENT

Adopted by the Trustees on 7th June 1991

Within the limits proposed by the Trust Deed regarding:

1.	The categories of people eligible to benefit

2.	The criterion of need

In particular the Trustees adopt the Napo Equal Opportunities Statement which says that there will be no discrimination on the grounds of race, colour, ethnic or national origin, religion, creed, sex, sexual orientation or marital status. The Trustees will endeavour to ensure the local representatives are aware of and abide by the Equal Opportunities Statement and that potential beneficiaries are aware of the statement.

EDRIDGE NATIONAL OFFICE

Richard Martin, the Secretary of the Fund and the Administrative Secretary are happy to help with any queries you may have. Please contact us at the above address and number. If we are not in please leave a message on the answerphone. Personalised Edridge stationery is available on request as are any of the forms contained within this booklet.

RETIRED STAFF

(Including Widows or Widowers of the Service)

There is a wide variety of support given by different probation areas to retired staff in general. There is no national organised arrangement for supporting retired staff. This policy paper draws together a selection of some of the current activities that are available and is not exhaustive.

1.	Database of retired staff

Each probation headquarters should have a list of retired staff in their area. However, if this is not the case then the County Treasurer will certainly have a list of those to whom pensions are being paid. The problem that arises may be that on retirement people move about the country and, therefore, unless it happens by chance, there may be retired probation staff in your area about whom nothing is known.

2.	Methods of keeping in touch

Many CPOs have their own tea/lunch parties when all retired staff are invited. This can be once a year or more often. Usually Edridge reps get themselves invited to this type of function where news can be shared.

3.	Newsletters

Some reps send newsletters, either of their own volition or together with other newsletters that are sent out by the County or other local bodies. Sometimes one or more active retired member helps with the production of such a newsletter and keeping in touch with others. There are areas where groups of retired staff meet together for social occasions in friendship and through those keep in touch with the local rep as to the health of each other.

4.	Christmas contact

Some Reps send Christmas cards to retired members and we, from the national office, send cards when requested by reps to various members. The Trustees give grants at Christmas to a number of people, mostly because of historical reasons. We now wish to phase out ‘gift’ type grants at Christmas, as they are against Charity Commission policy and only give when need is clear.

5.	Fundraising

It is known that retired members can help very much with fund raising and this can be and extremely good way of involving them in the Fund’s activities.

Minutes of Edridge Fund Trustees Meeting
Held at Napo HQ on Thursday 13 March 2008

1.	Present:	Wendy Jones, Mick Brittain, Anne King, David Cox, Chris Wilson
Richard Martin and Teresa Boorman [part of meeting only].

2.	Apologies:	There were none.

3.	Minutes of 6 December 2007 meeting were agreed and signed by the Chair.

4. Applications:

These were dealt with.

5. Matters arising from the minutes:

a) It was agreed that the application rota was working satisfactorily.

b)	The computers for TPO's

It was suggested that Richard write to Cordell Pillay at Napo, to consider this from a union point of view. Also Richard to write to Consortia Chairs throughout the country explaining that the Edridge Fund does not make grants for computers and asking them to consider other forms of funding if necessary.

6. Treasurer’s report

Theresa spoke to her report.

David presented a report to the Trustees from him, and spoke to that report.

In general it was felt that the finances of the fund are quite healthy. They show a reduction in the governance costs because of reduced expenses from both Gayton office and Trustee Meetings.

Theresa raised the subject of the annual grant from Napo to Edridge, which showed an increase in each year. Theresa suggested that we write to the Officers of Napo to ask that the donation be made on an annual basis, in advance. Richard agreed to write to Duncan Horner, Mike McClellan, Judy McKnight, and Jonathan Ledger.

Richard reported that when this grant was first agreed, it was to be between 1% and 2% of subscription income. Theresa thinks this has been overlooked - she thinks it is 1.5% at the moment and feels it could be increased.

Richard to research the original documentation on this, and bring it to the next meeting.

7. Accounts:

The Trustees confirmed that the change in auditing method had been agreed by the Charity Commission and that we can now use an independent examiner to complete our accounts.

Wendy absented herself from the meeting while the Trustees considered appointing Gina Anderson as our examiner. Gina’s application was accepted, and it was agreed that the fund would give her an honorarium depending on the amount of work needed. Wendy suggested that the honorarium should be no more than £250.

Richard to write to inform Gina.

8. Investments:

David is working on the investments in detail, and considering various options. The Trustees raised two concerns - that of ethical policies, particularly relating to debt recovery companies, and also arms trading companies. David will report in due course on his findings.

9. Secretary’s Report:

It was agreed that Richard will prepare Policy Documents, originally written in 2004, and send them to the Trustees for their consideration at the next meeting.

10. Jan’s Replacement:

The Trustees were sorry to learn that Jan was retiring, and agreed to review the posts of the Secretary and Admin Secretary. Richard and Jan will provide job descriptions to the Trustees before the next meeting, so that the application process can be completed in time.

11. CAFCASS report:

Wendy had nothing to report.

12. Publicity:

The Trustees considered Joanna’s report and were sorry that she was not well and therefore not able to attend the meeting.

It was agreed wholeheartedly that we must go ahead with marketing and fund-raising as letter outlined in her December report. It was urged that we develop some ideas as soon as possible for ways in which the fund can be better marketed. David stated that the money to pay Joanna is set aside in the fund and ready for when she had completed her work.

Richard to contact Joanna as soon as possible to start.

13. Oral History Project:

Theresa reported that the project had not yet broken even financially and therefore there was no money at present for Edridge. It was hoped that money would be forthcoming in the future.

14. Charity Commission:

The Trustees reviewed current Charity Commission information which they are being sent to a regular basis. Mick particularly asked that more time be given for this subject.

15. Reps’ Conference:

Richard presented a list of information sheets that are available on the fund’s website for Trustees to download should they be having meetings with Reps.

16. Any Other Business:

Membership of ACO was discussed and it was agreed that we would not take up membership at this time.

17. Napo Charity:

Nicki's paper relating to this subject was reviewed. Chris said that the issue was not being taken forward and wished that the Trustees would be more proactive. Chris suggested that the Trustees should progress by bringing a motion from Edridge Trustees to the Napo AGM, stating that the fund should be for Napo members only.

Mick suggested that we should have a proper debate about the subject, and David felt that there may be a more prudent way of dealing with the subject. Anne felt that we should be more proactive.

Wendy, Chair, suggested that the Trustees take a vote at this meeting to decide on the way forward. Chris therefore proposed the motion that:-

the Trustees should be more proactive and bring a motion to Napo Conference seeking that the Edridge Fund be for Napo members only.

David proposed an amended motion that:-

the working party set up to consider the Napo fund should resume, and
in particular clarify the legal position.

The Trustees voted on the amendment, which was passed four votes to one.

18. Next meeting to be held on 22 May at GFTU.

                Remaining meeting dates are:

                 22 May GFTU
10 July Gayton
25 September GFTU
4 December GFTU

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Minutes of Edridge Fund Trustees Meeting
Held at GFTU on Thursday 6 December 2007

1	Present: Wendy Jones, Mick Brittain, Anne King, David Cox and
Richard Martin. Theresa Boorman (morning only).

2	Apologies: Chris Wilson

3	Minutes of 27 September meeting were agreed and signed, with an amendment to paragraph 8 adding Anne King’s name to signatories. *

4. Applications:
These were dealt with

5	Matters Arising:

	a)	Applications Rota
It was agreed to continue the rota in the same manner, i.e. fortnightly. David to start from 6.12.07 to 19.12.07, then Chris, Anne, Wendy, Mick. Richard to publish new rota. Trustees made a target for themselves to respond to the rota Chair within five days.

	b)	Notes on Application Form
These were agreed by the Trustees and it was decided that they should be put on the website and as an attachment when application forms are sent out via e-mail.

	c)	Computers for TPOs
Richard to contact Jonathan Ledger again to discuss how Napo can continue to try to support TPOs in this area. It was also suggested that we point applicants towards websites which may help to buy cheap computers (David to send information to Richard about these websites.) Theresa suggested that we send any correspondence regarding TPOs to Cordell Pillay as well as Jonathan Ledger, as she is the person responsible for TPO issues.

6 Treasurer’s Report:

David tabled a detailed paper relating to the fund’s financial situation, which he stated was an interim paper setting out his intentions to look in-depth at the subject. A discussion ensued amongst the Trustees and Theresa, and there was particular reference to investing the money other than is done at present. David has suggested that the Charity Aid Foundation investment fund could be very applicable to us and that he felt we would have £10,000 to invest in his and make a reasonable return. David will investigate further.

David looked at what minimum balance we should hold in accounts, particularly on the current account, and felt that something like £4,000 should be appropriate. However, he is still considering this matter.

David is to look at investments in detail and is to discuss these with HSBC and Theresa. It may be that a wider method of investing is more suitable to the fund and he will consider this.

David is also considering governance costs and these were discussed by the Trustees. It was agreed that they are as reasonable as can be at present, bearing in mind the need to service the fund effectively. It was stated that greater turnover would not mean greater governance costs.

David and Theresa particularly discussed banking and investment ideas and David will keep in touch with Trustees by email as he makes progress with his investigation.

David also explained that whilst he has access to the Unity account via the website, he could not withdraw any funds from it himself – only with a second signature.

7 Accounts:

a) To confirm change of auditing method:
This was confirmed

b) To elect an auditor:

The Trustees considered two quotations we have from accountants local to Gayton, and felt that they were quite high at £1000 plus VAT. Wendy and Richard are to hold discussions with possible other people who could do the job and will report back to the Trustees.

Wendy as Chair signed the minutes. These will be sent to the Charity Commission to enable them to agree the change in the Trust Deed.

8. Secretary’s Report
There was nothing specific to report.

9. CAFCASS report
Wendy had nothing specific to report.

10. Publicity person:

The report by Joanna had been emailed to Trustees prior to the meeting and was tabled as well. The Trustees were pleased with the initial thinking of the report, and agreed with the option that had suggested on page 2 of her report, “go on the offensive now and through marketing and more upfront fund-raising get the message across about the benefit of edridge grants to all (union and non-union members, and Unity members) with the goal of maintaining the status quo after the October AGM”.

The report was discussed in detail, and was then linked to the report by Nicki relating to the Napo fund and, again, was discussed in depth by the Trustees.

11. Napo Charity:

Nicki Kenney’s report was received by the Trustees by email and was tabled at the meeting. The Trustees particularly thank Nicki for her work. The report was lengthy, containing a good deal of information from the Charity Commission. The Trustees considered Nicki’s comments on the first two pages of the report in particular. A wide variety of views were considered by the Trustees and much discussion ensued. Some of the views were as follows:

One Trustee thought that there was a danger in following the views of the Napo members who propose the motion at this time, as it was felt that maybe we should wait until a decision has been made on the motion.

However there was a feeling that we should be much more proactive and we should publicise ourselves more than we used to. We wish to promote union membership throughout our work and we should have a campaign. The two items were suggested by Nikki and were felt to be a good idea.

Theresa explained that the Napo officers will meet on17 December to discuss the budget for this year and next year and she suggested that we contact them to make a bid to increase the proportion of the membership fees in 2009, on the basis that we ought to be moving forward giving more grants thus greater expenditure.

It was agreed that Richard would draft a paper for David to review, which would then be sent to Trustees for agreement before sending to Napo.

Although we feel we are being transparent to a point, we ought to be more transparent. We ought to look for more applications and explain the funding and the governance cost in more details. We should publish percentage figures of Napo members getting grants (which is about 70 per cent for this grant period).

There was a discussion as to whether the working party should continue bearing in mind the current situation and it was felt quite that we should invite Nikki to the next Trustees meeting when matters may be clearer.

The Chair asked Richard to write thanking Nicki.

12. Financial Indemnity of Trustees:

There was a lengthy discussion about indemnity, during which time Richard absented himself from the room. Theresa agreed to find more information relating to financial indemnity.

Later in the meeting Mick stated that he did not think we need to insure against indemnity at this time, which was in concert with the other Trustees at the last meeting.

13. Oral history project – update:

No more information at present, although it is known that a drive to sell more books is taking place.

14. Charity Commission News:
No relevant information.

15. Reps’ Conference:

The Trustees felt that it was important that we should contact Reps, and Richard will revisit the way in which we do so. He will prepare a package of information as agreed. Jan to send out to the Trustees to pass on to Reps.

16. Any other business.
There was none.

17. Meeting dates for 2008 were agreed as follows:

Thursday 13 March	Napo HQ (change from suggested date)
22 May GFTU
10 July Gayton
25 September	GFTU
4 December GFTU

Most applications for help come through the Reps - although people can contact the Edridge Secretary, Richard Martin or a Trustee.

The Trustees meet about six times a year to consider applications. In emergencies applications can be processed quickly.

Many Probation and CAFCASS practitioners spend their working lives dealing with other people’s problems but do not always know where to turn when things become difficult for themselves – and that’s where we come in.

The Edridge Fund exists to provide money, support and help to people who need it. This could mean cash to help cope with a crisis, a sympathetic ear, professional support or help to organise stress counselling ... or anything else that we can do in your particular situation.

We are allowed to help if your job makes you eligible to join Napo (the Trades Union and Professional Association for Family Court and Probation Staff), even if you are not a member. We can also help if you are retired and Edridge can help families and dependents if the eligible person dies. Edridge gives help to people like you who need it, so don’t be afraid to ask.

Application is swift, confidential and involves completion of just one form. This is available from the Fund’s National Secretary, Richard Martin, at the address below or from your local Edridge Representative. Alternatively click here to print a copy of the form.

The Edridge ‘Benevolent Trust’ was set up in 1934 in memory of Sydney Edridge - the founder and first General Secretary of Napo. It was established in response to a real need to ‘alleviate cases of distress amongst serving and retired Officers’ and gives approximately £30,000 a year to people in need. Today Edridge is an independent registered Charity run by five Trustees. The Trustees are appointed by Napo, which makes a substantial donation to the Fund.

Edridge can offer financial help on the basis of demonstrated need. Applications are assessed individually, with input from local Reps where appropriate, and grants are designed to help towards the applicant’s specific requirements.

Previous Fundraising Events

Edridge Fund entered runners in 2006 Marathon and raised £3,500:

This was the first time that the Edridge Fund had the opportunity to enter runners in the Marathon. We were fortunate to be allocated places by another charity, PALMS*. This cost us £750 per runner. However, we still made just over £3,500 for Edridge.

We are very grateful to Rob Thomas and Chris Martin for their efforts, both in training for and running the Marathon itself, but also for their fund-raising efforts amongst their families, friends and colleagues. Following are Rob’s and Chris’s comments about their day.

Rob:
Well I did it! 5 hours 23mins. Only 10 minutes outside my target time. I kept going, no stops or walking, although I was very tempted to walk between 20 and 21 miles.

I would like to say a big thank you to those of you who have already coughed up sponsorship money. It really kept me going through the training miles and the marathon itself. To those of you who have pledged money, I hope you can get it to me as soon as possible. Some Napo branches throughout England and Wales have already pledged money and I will be following them up as well.

Chris:
Well, the nights of training paid off to a certain extent. I was running along well until I hit the crucial twenty mile point when my knee went "pop" and I found myself unable to run properly. Having had a spot of bandaging applied (to ensure that people would know how brave I was being) I managed to limp the last six miles to finish in a time of five hours two minutes, which was a little outside my target time of four and a half hours, but pleasing given the circumstances.

I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who sponsored Rob and me. I can genuinely say when I was sitting in the St. John's ambulance tent with the rest of the wounded, the thought of people backing me with their hard earned cash forced me back out onto the road. So thanks once again.

We have received some large cheques from various Branches – although more would be appreciated obviously. Also, if you are one of the people who signed a form to sponsor our runners but did not send any money at the time – now is the time to send your money in please!

We at the Edridge office think it’s been a good fund-raiser and well worth repeating. What do you think?

*PALMS works to support past and present residents of Community Support Homes, a group of residential care homes and supported housing for the mentally ill.

Gift Aid is a simple way of increasing your donation to the Edridge Fund by over a quarter with the assistance of the Inland Revenue.

Do you pay Tax?

Are you giving, or would you like to give, money to the Edridge Fund?

If you answered YES to both questions then you can use Gift Aid to add 28p to every £1 you give, at no extra cost to yourself.

Most of us have to pay tax. With Gift Aid, if you pay tax the Inland Revenue gives back to the charity the tax on any money donated for charitable purposes. All you need to do is fill in the Gift Aid declaration and the charity will do the rest to boost the value of your donation by 28 per cent.

If you are unsure whether your donations qualify for Gift Aid tax relief, please ask the charity or ask your local tax office for leaflet IR113 Gift Aid.

Donations can be made in various forms and can be cancelled at any time by notifying the charity. Donations could be made in any of the following ways:

Standing order from your bank

Direct deduction from your salary

Cheque made payable to the Edridge Fund

If you would like to start donating please click here

Your questions answered:

How often do I fill in a Gift Aid declaration?

Only once. It will remain for as long as you remain a taxpayer or until you choose to cancel it

Is there a minimum amount?

No, you can give whatever amount you want but it must be done in one of the ways shown above

How do I donate using Gift Aid?

Whichever way is most convenient for you - monthly, quarterly or annually - by cheque or standing order

What happens if I already have a deed of covenant with the Edridge Fund?

All Deeds of Covenant have now expired so please contact Edridge to ask for a Gift Aid Declaration form if you have not already done so.

If you would like to start donating to the Edridge Fund please print out the Gift Aid declaration, fill in the details and return it to:

Many Probation and Cafcass staff spend their working lives dealing with other people's problems but do not always know where to turn when things get difficult for themselves. The Edridge Fund is here to provide money, support and help if you need it. This could mean cash to cope with an immediate crisis, and for support and advice from one of our Representatives.

The Edridge Fund may be able to help you. Application is swift and confidential, and involves completion of just one form. To apply simply print out the application form, fill it in and either post it to us or send the completed file in an email.

We are allowed to help if your job makes you eligible to join the National Association of Probation Officers (Napo), even if you are not a member. We can also help if you are retired and Edridge can help families and dependents if the eligible person dies. Edridge gives help to people like you who need it, so don't be afraid to ask.

Eligible parties include:

All employees of the Service who are eligible to be members of Napo

Retired Staff

Bereaved Partners, Spouses and Dependents of the above.

Edridge operates only on the basis of demonstrated need. Applications are assessed individually and grants are designed to help towards the applicant's specific requirements.

APPLY NOW:
Click here to download the Application Form

NB: if you are unable to download this form, please contact either your Edridge Rep or the Gayton office to obtain a copy.

EXPLANATORY NOTES FOR COMPLETING THE APPLICATION FORM

It is expected that all applications will be dealt with by the Trustees within three weeks. However, in cases of extreme emergency decisions can often be made within a very short time.

Whilst the headings listed under Monthly Income and Monthly Expenditure are largely self-explanatory, some applicants have been unclear particularly relating to the following headings.

• Entertainment, leisure, holidays:
This monthly figure should include such items as gym member-ship, going out to the cinema, for meals, etc.
and should include the pro-rata monthly cost of holidays (if any).

• Food and household expenses:
This relates to the monthly cost of food shopping as well as cleaning materials, pet food, newspapers, etc.

Please note that if, for any reason, you do not wish your local Edridge Rep to be aware of your application this should be clearly stated on your form.

Fundraising events are organised locally or nationally for Edridge.

In order for the Fund to continue giving grants that really help to meet need, it is vital that individual colleagues continue to support it. A good systematic method of support is regular giving either via your County Treasurer or your Bank. By completing a Gift Aid form you can increase your donation by 28p for each £1 given.

They present an annual report on the work of the Fund to the NEC at the AGM. Each Napo Branch elects its own Edridge Representative and this Representative is usually the first point of contact for anyone wishing to use the Fund.

Representatives are also encouraged to offer personal support should this be welcomed by any applicant. This role is, therefore, of vital importance to the Branch and to the operation of the Fund. The Edridge Representatives and Trustees treat every application in the strictest confidence. These are considered at regular meetings throughout the year or, in response to crises, between meetings.
